About the band

The Jump Hounds is a New Orleans-based sextet that specializes in 'jump', the jazz-based rhythm and blues that bridged the gap between swing and rock & roll. To keep this often-overlooked style of music alive, the band plays a mix of Jump Era classics and original compositions within the idiom. The result is a repertoire that balances energetic up-tempo numbers, slow blues, and cozy mid-tempo swingers. This breadth of material makes for dynamic live shows that are tailored to the audience. The band marries the polish of the swing era with the raucous abandon of rock & roll by drawing on its members' experience as working musicians.

Jointly lead by Marty Peters (saxophones, vocals) and Nicholas Solnick (drums and vocals), the band is rounded out by James Beaumont (saxophones), Steve Lands (trumpet), Michael Torregano (piano and organ), and Stephen Bohnstengel (bass).

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, The Jump Hounds focused on bringing jump to a global audience via the internet. The group produced three Hi-Fi live stream shows in 2020, teaming up with the New Orleans Jazz Museum, local swing dancers, Downman Sounds Studios, and Worklight Pictures. The band’s first music video, Jump No. 1 (an international collaboration of music and dance), has reached over 40,000 viewers. As the venues in New Orleans cautiously started opening, The Jump Hounds started their weekly swing dance event, “Jumpin’ at the Den,” at a small venue called the Dragons Den, to cater to their beloved swing dance community. The event was a huge success as the Den quickly became one of the only events of its kind during those uncertain times. Many people traveled from all over the country to get a chance to dance with the band.

Once the city began to open fully, The Jump Hounds ended their residency at the Den and sought greater opportunities. In just one year, the band has been able to play at multiple notable venues and festivals in and around New Orleans, gaining more fans and recognition in the process. The band has also collaborated with a tap dance collective in Savannah, GA, and toured the Gulf Coast. In Spring of 2023, the band landed a chance to play at the esteemed New Orleans Swing Dance Festival, and they delivered a stunning performance that left the audience wanting more.
